Agro-well and pump diffusion in the dry zone of Sri Lanka: Past trends, present status and future prospects AgEcon
Kikuchi, Masao; Weligamage, Parakrama; Barker, Randolph; Samad, Madar; Kono, Hiroichi; Somaratne, H.M..
The use of shallow wells, equipped with small pumps, to lift groundwater has spread rapidly in many agricultural regions of tropical monsoonal Asia. In Sri Lanka, the rapid and pervasive invasion of agro-wells and pumps drew the attention of policymakers and researchers, but many questions were left unanswered due to lack of research in the area. This study aims to fill this gap in knowledge, based on observations and data obtained in field surveys conducted in major and minor irrigation schemes in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. This report gives the key findings of this study into the pattern, extent and causes of the spread and use of agro-wells and pumps in traditional villages and irrigated settlement schemes. It investigates farmer investments in...

Improving performance and financial viability of irrigation systems in India and China AgEcon
International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
China and India face similar challenges in managing their irrigation economies. Both are developing nations with large agricultural populations, high population densities and a high proportion of agriculture under irrigation. Both are facing challenges in financing existing irrigation systems in the face of broader economic reforms. And in both countries, groundwater provides a particular challenge since it is a major source of irrigation, but with accelerating declines in both quantity and quality. Problems in financing surface irrigation systems, worries about continued groundwater table declines along with cost implications for both farmers and the energy industry, and a range of other issues have raised serious concerns over the future sustainability...

Institutional changes to reduce land preparation delay in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. AgEcon
Loeve, Ronald; Somaratne, Pallewatte G.; Ariyaratne, Badugodahewa Ranjith; Anputhas, Markandu; Jinapala, Kiribandage.
Although many irrigation systems in the dry zone of Sri Lanka have water shortage problems, water consumption is very high during land preparation. This paper analyzes the impact of institutional interventions on efficient water management, especially during the land preparation period. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the factors behind prolonged periods of land preparation so that system managers and farmers communities can develop appropriate interventions to reduce water consumption.

Irrigação de pequenas áreas. Infoteca-e
PINTO, J. M..
